SPLC Reaction

Taking it off campus: New court decisions focus on online student expression.

1. Fair report privileges- because students have free speech online.
2. Fair comment and criticism - because when the student published the story, she should have known that anyone can comment and give their opinions on it. Good or bad..

Summary: When Avery Doninger thought that her high school was cancelling a battle of the bands style concert, she did what anyone would have. She spoke out about her opinion online. Although she called many student officials "douchebags" and encouraged her fellow students to make the superintendent even more angry.

Her "venting" led to a case in the Supreme Court called Doninger vs. Neihoff in 2007. Although people at the central office of her school district agree that she shouldn't have posted such a harsh story, many of her fellow peers agree that she did the right thing. Either way, she did have the freedom of speech to say what she wanted.
