One thing I really liked was how they talked about Christmas coming up. I really enjoy Christmas (not only because of the presents) but because it's an awesome time to experience all the beautiful snow. And the report really got me excited for this upcoming winter season.
I think they could improve on when they talked about the music here at Free State. They spell Jon Fitzgerald's name two different ways. Maybe they could actually ask him how he spells his name.

1 in 1000 project questions.
1. What did you most like about this project and why?
-I really liked getting to know Grace a lot better, and seeing how good of a volleyball player she is. I also really liked the interview because there were multiple moments when I would ask her a serious question and it turned out to be a laughing matter. It was a very fun experience!
2. What challenges did you face?
-Some of the challenges I faced were when I coached her to speak in complete sentences but the audio came out and there were a couple responses that were not complete. Another challenge was the pictures I took because volleyball players don't stand still very well when playing. They obviously move around a lot.
3. What is something you would change if you cold do the project again?
-I would definitely change my audio and try and get a better recording than what I did. I also would take more in-focus pictures and maybe take some of when she wasn't at practice. I also would have asked her for some of her pictures from when she was younger while playing volleyball.
Overall, I really liked the project even though it was very difficult to fit a time in that worked well for me, and for her.

AAR Reaction Article; due October 14, 2011.
When I first read the article, I knew right from the beginning it was going to be either a persuasive article or a commentary. Was I right? Yes I was. Kathleen Parker (my adopt a reporter) also goes into how she knows the problems and the consequences that Sonia Sotomayer is going through. That's what I really like about this reporter. She's a down to earth reporter who I can truly and fully understand.

J.C. Penney T-Shirt Controversy
Conflict:
Melissa Wardy, the t-shirt designer didn't realize that the "I am too pretty to do homework so my brother does it for me" t-shirt would cause so much drama. However, mothers and reporters thought differently.
Audience:
Considering that the t-shirt was made for young girls ages 7-12 years of age, I think that they might find this interesting, due to the fact that it is about fashion.
Timeliness:
Yesterday, August 31st, 2011 is when the t-shirt was released. The same day, it was taken off J.C. Penney's website, and out of their stores.
Summary:
Melissa Wardy designed this t-shirt saying "I'm too pretty to do homework so my brother does it for me." She designed it for the J.C Penney online website, and was quickly shipped to the stores. However, the press seems to think that this is a controversy and that this needs attention.
Reaction:
Mothers and news reporters seem to think that this t-shirt has an inappropiate and wrong message to it. In today's society, we tell our girls to think that "everyone is beautiful and no one should be told different." If that's true, then why was this t-shirt made? What is it trying to tell us? That girls who actually DO their homework, aren't pretty? Whatever the designer is saying, I don't think this shirt should have been made at all.

Which is more important, freedom or safety?
Freedom or Safety?
I personally think that freedom is more important. If we didn't have freedom, how would we be able to say what we want? How would we be able to tell others what we want changed? And besides, people who have "safety" aren't really safe. I mean, America has "safety" yet there is still terrorism here. There are still crimes being committed. Murders, are a good example of how we aren't really "safe". With freedom, you are GUARANTEED freedom if you are an American citizen. You will always have a freedom of speech, freedom of religion, etc.

SPLC Reaction
Taking it off campus: New court decisions focus on online student expression.
Her "venting" led to a case in the Supreme Court called Doninger vs. Neihoff in 2007. Although people at the central office of her school district agree that she shouldn't have posted such a harsh story, many of her fellow peers agree that she did the right thing. Either way, she did have the freedom of speech to say what she wanted.
1. Fair report privileges- because students have free speech online.
2. Fair comment and criticism - because when the student published the story, she should have known that anyone can comment and give their opinions on it. Good or bad..
Summary: When Avery Doninger thought that her high school was cancelling a battle of the bands style concert, she did what anyone would have. She spoke out about her opinion online. Although she called many student officials "douchebags" and encouraged her fellow students to make the superintendent even more angry.

Proposal - 1 in 1,000 Project
Who am I interviewing? - Grace Miller
What makes their story compelling? - She plays for the varsity volleyball team here at FreeState and she is only a sophomore.
Ten questions I will ask her -
1. When did you start playing volleyball?
2. Why do you play volleyball?
3. What goes through your mind when you play?
4. How does it make you feel when you win?
5. What do you do that helps you get ready for a game?
6. Who do you look up to in terms of another prestigious volleyball player?
7. Have you ever been injured while playing? What happened?
8. What position do you play?
9. When did you feel most proud of yourself/your team mates? Like, what happened in that game?
10. What do you like most about volleyball?

Issue 2 Critique of the Free Press
Thing I think they did well:
I really like how they talked about college life. I may only be a sophomore, but it kind of got me ready for what I should expect in the coming years. I also found out about soroity living, and how KU has scholarship halls for students to live in as well.
Thing I think they could improve on:
I don't really like how the ads take up basically the whole paper. There is more ads in the paper than actual stories. I understand that the newspaper team has to use ads to pay for the newspaper but really? I mean half a page ad is just ridiculous to me.

First African woman to win Nobel Peace Prize dies
Elements of newsworthiness:
1. Timeliness-- the woman died on Monday, September 26, 2011.
2. Impact-- the first African woman is no longer here for history.
Combining environmentalism and social activism, Kenya's most known woman won the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize. Wangari Maathai, was the first African woman to win any Nobel Peace Prize. Today, Monday September 26, 2011 she died at the age of 71. Maathai continuously contributed to Kenya by building trees (The Green Belt Movement). She also was the first East African woman to receive her doctorate from the University of Nairobi. Reaction: I personally think it is a sad story to know that the first African woman to win such a prestigious prize has passed. If I lived in Africa, I know I would be looking up to this woman and I would be devastated to know that she has died. I feel sorry for her family, because she died but at the same time, I don't. The reason I don't is because look at how many people recognize her. She will probably be famous all around Africa for many years to come.
Ex-Jayhawks relive Phog’s magic in legends game at KU
Elements of Newsworthiness:
1. Proximity- the game happened right here in Lawrence, Kansas.
2. Oddity- it isn't everyday that you see NBA stars just walking around in Lawrence.
Summary: On Saturday, September 24th, 2011, NBA superstars such as Paul Pierce, Mario Chalmers, Julian Wright, Xavier Henry and many more came back to the school where they all started their career. The University of Kansas right here in our hometown, Lawrence. Some highlights of the game was when Chalmers did a repeat of the 2008 National Championship. He tied the game up with a three pointer. Also, Paul Pierce got emotional talking about his three year experience at Kansas. “He [Scott Pollard, coach at the time Pierce was here] was like a father to me,” Pierce said, getting choked up. The game ended in an 111-111 tie, at Allen Fieldhouse.
Reaction: I was at this game! It was really great to see my favorite jayhawk of all time (Mario Chalmers) play against some of our newer players. Personally, I think they should have one of these games once every other year if not once a year. As many people there were that were at the game, I think they would be able to manage that. Hopefully we see more "Legends of the Phog" games here in Lawrence.

Name of article: "Sarah Palin, un-trending"
Author: Kathleen Parker
Reaction: Teasing leads to boredom. Boredom leads to anger. For many months, Sarah Palin was "teasing" the American society to whether she would run for president or not. For a while there, it seemed like everywhere you turned someone would be talking about Sarah Palin. "Sarah Palin this, Sarah Palin that.." Well guess what? Recently, at the Republican debate in Iowa, she didn't show up. Nor was her name mentioned. Supposedly, she has a "bus tour" she was on. Personally, I am glad that she is "un-trending". In my opinion, she wouldn't make a great president anyway. I mean she's too busy making deals with television companies, and selling books. How could she fulfill the role of president?! Maybe Kathleen is right. All Sarah Palin really does care about is money. Money money money money. Time will tell, but as for now; you can say goodbye to the press making anymore stories about Sarah Palin.

Health Care Fraud Now In Puerto Rico
Prominence:
In today's society, if you have health care you should be considered lucky. And for people to take that as a joke is just pathetic.
Policy:
As Obama has once said, healthcare is something to take very seriously. Then idiots like these Puerto Rican go and steal it from the ones who probably need it most.
Conflict:
Obviously being a thief is controversial, but when you steal something as serious as health care, it becomes a whole new story. Especially when it is $660,000 worth.
Summary:
According to the U.S. Attorney Office, 13 people including 3 Puerto Rican doctors are accused of commenting health care fraud. The doctor's were billing Medicare companies saying they performed these very expensive procedures on patients, when in reality they clearly did not.
Reaction:
I don't understand why these doctor's would even take the time to commit these crimes. They seem so un-worth the jail time in my eyes. I guess maybe because I know right from wrong, and clearly these immature children did not.

Jerry Jones Talks Himself Out of Some Money!
Prominence:
Owner of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones is obviously well known to the American Football scene. Mainly because America is known for football.
Timeliness:
The luncheon in which Jerry Jones mentioned the team's collective bargaining agreement happened on September 1, 2011.
Proximity:
Even though we obviously do not live in Dallas, football is everywhere in the US.
Summary:
When mentioning the team's bargaining agreement, Jones decided to make a joke about his team mate, Jay Ratliff's salary. Then, the team started begging Ratliff for a raise. Therefore, Jerry Jones is losing out on money. Guess he should learn when and where to keep is mouth shut!
Reaction:
I am not surprised. I think that Jerry Jones is a selfish, self centered, jerk. All he cares about is money, money, money, and then a little bit more money. I mean yes, if I was making millions and millions of dollars a year I would be self centered to. However, Jones is just a person who I honestly don't think gives a care about his players. And honestly, that is wrong.

Another human foot washes ashore in British Columbia
1. Oddity- Not everyday do you hear about random feet washing up on shore.
2. Timeliness- Tuesday night, a foot washes up on the shores of British Columbia.
3. Prominence- The last foot that washed up on shore was in 2007. So far, there have been over a dozen feet to wash up on shore.
Summary:
On Tuesday August 30, 2011 a human foot washed up on the shores of British Columbia. Police say they do not know where the foot had come from, but there has been a reported case of two men missing. The foot was inside a running shoe. The remains haven't been identified, however they match one of the two men who was reported missing.
Police seem to think that the foot was separated from the body naturally, and no foul play was involved.
Reaction:
When reading this, I literally got chills up my spine. Just to think of the people who saw the foot, I bet it traumatized them. I sure am glad I live in America and not in British Columbia to see that.

AAR Selection
1. What year did the reporter with their Pulitzer?
- She won the Pulitzer in 2010.
2. What publication did they work for at the time?
- The Washington Post.
3. Why did you select this person? (style of writing; topics, etc.)
- I chose this writer because she uses reputable and estimable word choice that I can relate to. I am a very opinionated person about mostly everything that has to do with my life. I can tell that Kathleen Parker feels the same exact way just by reading a piece of her work.

How I use the First Amendment in my everyday life.
The First Amendment is freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of petition, freedom of assembly, and the freedom of press. So, how do I use the First Amendment in my everyday life? Well, I go to school. I use my right of freedom of speech to tell the lunch ladies what I want for lunch. If I didn't have a say so, they would be choosing what I ate. I also use the freedom of petition in a way. If I see a food I don't like, I don't eat it. In my opinion that is my way of "petitioning."
I also use the First Amendment in my classes. For example, in chemistry class when we work as a team; I use my freedom of speech to say how I feel about an issue we are discussing. If I couldn't use that, my group would make decisions without me and I probably wouldn't be too happy.
At home, I use the freedom of assembly basically all the time. If my parents do something that I do not like, I get my sister to agree with me. Therefore, I am using my ability to protest as well.
Finally, I use the freedom of religion everyday no matter where I am. What I believe in is it. Nobody can tell me to believe in a certain "God". I can believe in whatever I would like.
